So of all the samplings I am a part of, at this time of the year I love the ones where I receive foods to sample because I am always looking for that new and upcoming item to brag about!
I have always found meat and cheese platters to be an easy way of entertaining, especially at the last minute. Growing up Italian, we were never without some sorts of dried meats, salamis, sausages and various cheeses and crackers in the fridge and pantry.
This week after Christmas, when the craziness started to settle and we were entertaining neighbors on Saturday night, I thought I would do something different from traditional cookies and coffee which we do all the time. So I figured why not do a savory instead of a sweet visit? Paired with a nice light wine because none of us were driving it seemed the right thing to do.
I removed the Boursin Cheese from the box and wrapper and noted that it had the consistency of a cream cheese. I placed it in the center of my platter and then around it placed various other cheeses, some prosciutto and Genoa salami and then lay down 4 various versions of entertaining crackers from a simple water cracker to a wheat/herb flavor.
Upon first spreading it upon the simple barely flavored water cracker, you could definitely taste the garlic and herbs. The spreadable consistency of this cheese was perfect for such a light, yet crunchy base. It paired very well with the dried meats in such small portions. The taste was light and herby but not overbearing as on the side of the garlic. It melted in your mouth and pleased the palate. I could actually see using it like a bruschetta base with a tomato salsa which I just might try the next time.
I have reviewed the Boursin website for other ways to cook with this cheese as the flavor was not overpowering. There are recipes I would love to try and as I said I am always looking for new recipes or new ingredients to cook with and therefore will experiment with ways to incorporate this product into my weekend dishes. Who knows, it may become a staple in my household!
Boursin cheeses can be found in the deli department of your local fine supermarkets. Use this handy store finder to find it near you!
